500 Internal Server Error

I don’t know if others are getting this but I keep getting the following error when I try to log in on the front page only. (It does eventually resolve after a number of reloads/refreshes of that page). I also occasionally get it on log out too.

Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator at [no address given] to inform them of the time this error occurred, and the actions you performed just before this error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

The fact that I can go to any other page and find that I have in fact logged in successfully suggests that the browser I use (Opera) is waiting and not receiving something from the server. It also suggests it may have something to do with either the Patreon or the twitter links. As the twitter feed hasn’t been updated in over 2 years, does it really need to be maintained? Could it not be removed thus removing a potential cause of these 500 Internal Server Errors?

I do…

I’ve got the same issue with Firefox and Chrome, so we can rule out a browser incompatibility.

I have had this problem for at least the last year, maybe longer just can’t remember when it started.

That page has been very slow for ages, as previously reported, whether signing on or linking from a different page when already signed on. I have seen Internal Server Error, though not today.

The bigger question is - does the Vault has any capability or capacity to fix issues anymore?

P.S. Patreon and the Twitter feed are really useful…

I’ve removed some of the blocks that hit the database such as the all time downloads from the front page and see if it helps over time.

That seems to be very much faster already.

P.S. when I said the Twitter feed is useful, I meant the regular messages sent to Twitter from the Vault.

I now realise there is some out-of-date Twitter stuff on the Vault front page, which I can only see when logged out. I guess that’s what @Tarot_Redhand meant. Happy to see that go if it helps.

I mean, maybe results aren’t being cached in memory? What is the website running on?

That was what I was talking about, not the posts that are made announcing new content over on Twitter itself.

Sorry for the bad news, but no change for me: between 7h30 and 8h00 (GMT +2), it’s still almost 100% error 500.

Still much improved in the UK this morning.

@4760 isn’t that the daily housekeeping time?

Helpful, thanks!

So there are two more I can remove from the front page that query the database but I haven’t been able to find them as easily as I was the Top Downloaded files one and remove it for everyone logged in or not.

In the meantime, you can go into your own account on NWVault and edit it (not the forum account). Scroll down to PERSONALIZE BLOCKS and deselect what you do not want appearing on the front page.

This does not stop it from appearing though if you are not logged in under your account, but if you let NWVault remember you once you log in, upon returning a few days later, you’ll still be logged in and those blocks will not appear or query the database.

I believe this is why NWVault loads quicker on all pages not on the landing page of the site, as other pages do not have Top Modules, Top Haks, Top Downloads, Weekly/Monthly Top Downloads being queried.

Fwiw, and too early to tell for sure, this has helped me a lot. It used to be an 80-90% failure rate. So far since your change it has been 0% (on maybe 10 visits). Thanks!

Might it be an idea to create a page just for those, with a link on the front page so they can still be accessed if people want to check them out?

FWIW, it seems to be quicker loading now.

HUGE improvement for me. I’m checking in at 1 PM Pacific, so much faster ATM.

Yes a major improvement and it keeps me logged every time I open the page up. Thank you for the adjustments you made

It seems to be quicker, and the “500 Internal Server Error” didn’t appear for the past two days. Thanks!
