Beamdog Acquisition by Aspyr

Just saw this breaking on social media this morning. Apparently Beamdog is being acquired by Aspyr Media, an Austin-based game company that I was previously unaware of. Aspyr is a wholly owned subsidiary of a parent company called Embracer, which I’ve also never heard of.

This is pretty big news. Does anyone know anything about either of these companies?

Didn’t knew them too. But Embracer isn’t that unknown, if you look at their past. Best known as THQ Nordic or Nordic Games…

Yeah, reading through all of that now. I didn’t know Embracer by that name, but I’ve heard of some of their component divisions. It looks like they own Dark Horse Media and Gearbox, among others.

Wow! They’re huge aren’t they? did they not do Call of Duty, Wolfenstein, some of the Star Wars games etc. ? Or do I have the wrong company?

Mind you, what does that mean for NWN?

Wolfenstein is made by ID Software who are owned by Bethesda who in turn are owned by Zenimax .

Star war games are published by Electronic Arts.

Ah, maybe I remember them well because they did various ports of games to the Mac.

Mind you, what does that mean for NWN?

In the worst scenario aspyr will order beamdog to stop supporting the enhanced games because they dont make a lot of money with them anymore and thus we’re screwed…

Been checking up a little. Seems Beamdog will remain an independent studio within Aspyr, although not entirely sure what that means about control over Beamdog’s support for NWN. I think you’re right in that Beamdog don’t have a lot of ways of keeping income rolling in through NWN if they can’t do premium modules. couldn’t argue I suppose. Not many companies still supporting 20 yr old games.

I noticed in one of the forum threads at Beamdog they talked about hoping to iron out problems with the help of “the community”. Maybe hoping the community around NWN will extend to covering MythForce? Not sure there’s the same attraction with it as the toolset.

Re. Support for EE games - See this page (near the bottom) and the next of the Ask Beamdog thread on their forums.
