AllTalk - A System for Implementing Scripted Scenes in Game by Tarot Redhand
Archive contains the following: demo module created in EE, a demo hak, an erf, 4 custom 2da files, the actual NwN scripts in a plain text file and the manual as well as a readme file.
This is a relatively simple system that allows non-scripters to implement complex conversations, religious chants and songs amongst other things without any scripting. Basically, you can create a group of NPCs speaking or acting in a co-ordinated fashion which makes it ideal for cults chanting, soldiers being trained/shouted at and other such occasions. You can alter the words they speak, animations, duration etc. quite easily in the relevant 2da.
All the parts of the system are controlled by just one local variable (set in the toolset) and two different types of 2da file, the script one ( don’t panic- no actual scripts involved. More like script as in play!) and the control one. Although these might sound a little daunting it isn’t really. The process is reasonably easy to follow, if a little detailed.
From my point of view it was very clearly laid out and explained and I was able to create my own scene with a crowd of NPCs trying to cheer up the PC by singing and dancing to a Beach Boys song. I can honestly say it was the most fun I have had in the toolset! Also, if I can follow it, anyone can.
From my limited playing about with the system I would put this in the category of one of those assets which deserves a wider audience. Its use would be very useful to (but isn’t exclusive to)cut-scenes. The biggest problem I had was getting my music to work properly!
Pros:
it works well and can be easily customised
there IS no actual scripting required
the documentation is clear, extensive and well laid out
Updated this year
Cons:
There are quite a few steps if you want to create your own scene
Need to follow the instructions carefully (!)
This was tested on EE. The original didn’t have votes (apart from mine!) and I gave it a 10, flushed with success at my results with it. I see no reason to change my mind on that.
