Seems we’ve had some early mod Christmas presents then. For my part, not created anything new yet…
So, I thought I’d dig up some “festive frolics” (commentators words not mine) from 1975 Top of the Pops (now defunct BBC tv show) featuring Pans People. (Way to make some people feel old )

Published in 1582 this a capella version was a number 14 hit in the UK in 1975. Unfortunately I couldn’t find a British video from that time so here is a German one instead -

1701 was a significant year for agriculture. In that year a 27 year old Jethro Tull invented the seed drill. This was in the early years of what became known as the agricultural revolution. This laid down principles of food production still followed today.
Fast forward to 1976 and the band Jethro Tull had this hit in the UK charts (that can’t be embedded) -

Jethro Tull is awesome. It’s a crime they are not in the Rock and Roll hall of fame. One of the greatest bands ever.
How about some piano - The Holly and the Ivy - Solo Pianist George Winston - from DECEMBER - YouTube
If you ask most millennials about ELP they’ll probably ask back if that is an old name for a CD (an eLP). That’ll be because they’ve never heard of Emmerson, Lake and Palmer. So what has that to do with this thread? Well, back in the 1970s Greg Lake had a Christmas hit with -

Released in 1973 this UK Christmas number 1 has returned to the UK charts 10 times over the intervening years and proved to be both this bands last number 1 as well as a life-time pension for Noddy Holder (Lead singer and writer).
Merry Christmas

It would seem that 1973 was a good year for Christmas singles in the UK as this song by ex. The Move lead singer Roy Wood. Another Christmas staple in the UK.
Warning - seems this was in the middle of the Glam Rock era (hence the clothing/make-up).

The final song to make the charts in 1973 and lowest chart position (of the three) for Christmas that year.
One more Christmas song to go but it’s not from the 1970s. Hope you’ve enjoyed these that you may not have known about before.

Final Christmas song. Often voted the most popular Christmas song of all time in the UK. This 1987 UK hit features the late Kirsty MacColl on vocals and the actor Matt Dillon as the arresting officer in the video which was shot in a real NYPD station. Wikipedia page for more interesting facts about the song.

Didn’t say anything about New Years though. It was a choice between this one and ABBA’s “Happy New Year”. Unfortunately the ABBA song mentions a specific year, so…
And that’s it for another year.
