Custom Content Challenge - January 2023 : Deserted Island

The theme for this month’s challenge: “Deserted Island”

In the style of Robinson Crusoe and Mysterious Island, this theme is about sparsely inhabited islands, particularly in a Caribbean-like setting. It could feature palm tree beaches, rocky promontories, wooden huts, coral reefs, primitive island forest, cave openings, head hunters, pirates, buried treasure, log & coconut rafts, shipwrecks, salvaged gear, wild pigs, aquatic races, shrunken heads, turtles, sharks, tropical rainfall, straw hats, and skimpy, heavily worn outfits with sunburned skin.

This theme was suggested by rjshae.

Guidelines:

  • It must be fully working in game.
  • Use of vanilla NWN or publicly available texture is fine. Just remember that NWN textures must have dimensions in powers of 2 (2, 4, 8, 16, 32, etc.).
  • Teamwork is welcome.
  • Beginners most welcome. Don’t be afraid, just try, you’ll be surprised!
  • “Custom Content” includes many sorts of things: models, scripts, prefabs (areas, items, creatures, conversations, quests, etc.), sounds, portraits, or anything else new for the game.
  • All submissions must be finished, working, and emailed to nwvaultccchallenge@gmail.com (or a non-Vault link provided) by July 1st, 2022. Sooner than that is perfectly fine too.

Some things you could include in the download/email that would make packaging everything up easier and faster:

  • Any 2da lines needed.
  • Screenshot from in game for use on the Vault page. Formats: .bmp, .jpg, .png, or .tga
  • Portraits (if needed) of your new goody. Placeables and monsters should include a portrait.
  • Inventory icons (if needed) of your new goody.
  • Any credits you would like listed.
  • If this is your first entry, please tell me what name you would like your work listed under and provide a link to your other NWN content if you want that displayed as well (the link bit is totally optional).
  • Remember, the Challenge is all about fun, sharing, creativity, and surprise!

This thread is for all sorts of discussion about this month’s theme: ideas for things to make, questions/concerns, announcement of what you intend to make, screen-shots of work in progress and/or finished projects.

If you want to discuss the Monthly Custom Content Challenge idea as a whole or wish to submit ideas/themes for future monthly Challenges, please post in its thread here - Custom Content Challenge - Theme Suggestions.

When submitting a new theme, please provide a title and short summary of the theme.

If you have a technical question about some custom content creation, please create a separate thread so that the answers can be found later by anyone, not just people interested in this Challenge.

We’ll try to help!

Have no fear and join the fun!

I hope that others have noticed something from that description of what is wanted. This challenge will be ideal for making one or more prefabs, scripts, mini maps and world maps as well as various models (not necessarily all at once though ).

1 week gone. Anyone thinking of doing something for this?

  • I got some original wrap-around clothing I made for practice, but I have to fill in missing large phenos

Nice…

Very nice, but the seams at the belly are too obvious.

I got some potential mischief on the way that I may or may not stream the making of during GDQ. Of the avian variety.

mind it is GDQ week so I may be slightly invested in speedruns

Yep, that bothers me too, but that is the limitation of the original game’s body structure.
That is why original content armors are very high-waist.

I like to show a little more hip, and this is the best compromise I can make for now.

Greetings!

Here is my contribution for this CCC as a hak:

Not much, not very original but I am a bit lack of time lately, sorry…

@Duke_Falcon I have it now. Thanks. Can you tell us what is in that hak please? Also have you any pictures of it’s contents?

[edit]

OK, looked inside the hak now. I see there are a number of creatures and 3 loadscreens. Cool. Your own pictures would be appreciated though. Thanks.

I have a dodo on the way. A couple of dodos

… I’m undecided if that last variant there, the Death Dodo, a somewhat obscure reference to a Jurassic World Spinoff I only know about because it was in an Ark mod (and y’know me and Ark mods) should remain but. The regular and the Dire dodo will absolutely make there ways out in time

Definitely. If an over-sized monstrosity is good enough for @PLUSH_HYENA_of_DOOM

See the Pengzilla (I edited a Red Dragon to give it that appearance so it behaved more like Godzilla in penguin form)

So I say, go for it.

FWIW according to science, the Dodo was a large flightless pigeon.

TR

The big one is too large for the cooking pot …

Those look great

Oh, sorry! I am rarely present here lately…

Yes, hak contains five snakes, a crab, a bulette and a “trapper fish” + 3 load screens (what seemed work fine for me).

Sand trapper (or trapper fish, a reskinned aboleth), ancient crab and “sand” bulette…

And the snakes (big meant to be an Anaconda, smallest is literally a Blood asp)…

Sorry again for the late answer\reaction! My apologies!
Hope this time I not forgot anything…

No problem. You got back before the end of the month and it’s always best to have the creators illustrations.

I submitted a walkable water tile for the Tropical tileset.

This is compatible with my Boat and Flotsam creatures (CCC August 2015 or CEP 2) , swimming / flying phenotype (see e.g. CEP 2) and most fish, including sharks.

Here our castaway swims in pursuit of a chest floating away from the shipwreck:

Thanks for that.

Having looking through Blender tutorials on YouTube, I thought I would try to make some 3D Island map placeables. So I followed this tutorial -

With an accompanying web page. This tutorial does not use any plug-ins. It does use this web tool to generate the data that it needs. After a few false starts, I managed to create this (based on NASA Height data and satellite imagery) -

From a different angle and a bit closer -

Which while it looks great, it has a really big problem. That model has well over 500, 000 faces. Reducing that by a factor of 1000 does reduce it to over 5000 faces but to my eyes it looks crap. So, back to the drawing board. I have a few other tutorials to explore but I definitely make no guarantees that I’ll actually produce anything this month.

FWIW, if anyone wants to take a look at the model (based off a volcanic island in the Aleutians) here is the Blend file - Island1.7z (167.2 KB)

The texture -

(looks like these forums resized it from 2048x2048)

and the height map -
