Extra Slot Wizard Level 1

Maybe I am misunderstanding the description of Extra Slot Wizard Level 1(and the other levels). The way I understand it, when you take the feat, you gain the ability to cast an additional spell per day for that spell level. For example, if you are a 5th level Wizard, no specialist school and 1 bonus 1st level spell for INT 14, you are able to cast a total of 3 first-level spells. But, if you take the Extra Slot Wizard Level 1 feat, you should then be able to cast 4 first-level spells. If my understanding of this feat is correct, then why is it not working for my wizard? Totally befuddled by this. Please tell me what I am missing. Thanx.

In fact, I just tested it for a Cleric and for a Bard and same result. Nothing changed. What’s the trick that I am missing?
And yet, the Item Property Bonus Level Spell works fine. Why won’t the feat?

With that feat you will get an extra slot. Did you add a spell to the new slot, rest and then see four active 1st level spells when you open the spellbook?

I’m confused. How would I add a spell to the new slot if the new slot is not showing up in the first place? If at 3rd level, I have 4 spell slots allowing me to select 4 spells to cast, then I acquire the Extra Slot feat for that spell level, and no new slots show up, how am I supposed to select that 5th spell if there is nowhere for me to pur it?

@temyankee

It sounds like you may have a file issue if you are not gaining these extra slots. I went into game to test for you, and here are my results, with images to show what you should have …

WIZARD LEVEL 8 PRIOR LEVELLING:

WIZARD LEVEL 9 EXTRA 3RD LEVEL SLOT:

WIZARD LEVEL 9 EXTRA 4TH LEVEL SLOT:

WIZARD LEVEL 9 EXTRA DID NOT TAKE ANY SLOT FEAT:

I know how it’s supposed to look. But, when I create a character using the Deep Imaskari Race, which is one of Kaedrin’s, the Extra Slot Level 1 feet is granted on the first rest. Nothing happens when it is added to the character. Even when I use the Save Game Editor and add the feat that way, nothing happens. I may not know everything about this game, but I have been scripting a lot of my own things, thanks to the help of kevLs and a couple of others. I never did anything to any of the Extra Slot feats, except create a couple of them for Kaedrin’s Hexblade class. Here, I’ll show you:

Base level one character, before adding the Extra Slot level 0 and level 1 feats.

Same character with Extra Slot level 0 and Level 1 feats added, but before resting:

And after resting:

You should state this kind of info at the start. :grin:

You need to ask Kaedrin or those that use their work. (Sorry, but I am not familiar with their work.)

However, I know that this feat cannot be taken at such a low level in normal circumstances, and so you would need to check along those lines in the mod.

All the best. :slight_smile:

It’s not a mod issue. He didn’t create something, he simply used the Feat Add scripting to add the feat. Regardless, is you use the Save Game Editor, or any other method to add a feat that your character does not necessarily qualify for, you still end up with the ability to use it. Contacting Kaedrin won’t help this situation, plus, the screenshots above were for a Svirfnebln Wizard, which came from the game itself. The Extra Slot feats also are hardcoded in the game, not something manipulatable by script. So, I am still faced with the same problem, Lance.

Save your game and then reload it. Do the extra spell slots show after the reload?

@temyankee

If they are “hard-coded”, then wouldn’t that mean (according to this, Extra Slot | NWN2Wiki | Fandom) that the extra slot would not be allowed? i.e. Maybe the game engine prevents the extra slots if the PC with the feat does not have at least four spell cast levels?

As I say, I have not worked with allowing such benefits outside normal boundaries like this, and so my knowledge is limited here. :slight_smile: What happens if you level the PC to at least 4 spell cast levels with the feat taken at the earlier level? Does it appear at the later levels?

That did not work. I already thought of that.

Even when I advance a character naturally, the Extra Slot feat for leel 0 and 1 don’t work. So again, I am still in the same boat.

Did you try as high as fifth level, just in case it needed that extra level over the four?

This character was advanced to 6th level. I saved the character at 5th level, then selected each of the first 3 Extra Slot feats allowable, Level 0, Level 1, and Level 2. Bear in mind, a 6th level Wizard, with no Specialist School, can cast 3 level-1 spells, 3 level-2 spells, and 2 level-3 spells. With an INT of 16, the character has a bonus 1st, 2nd, and 3rd level spell, bringing the total allowable to 4, 4, and 3. Here are the results:

Level 0

Level 1

and Level 2

I hope you see what is happening here. I just don’t understand it.

@temyankee

Sorry, without going into the code, which I do not have the time to do while currently working on my own module, I cannot suggest anything more than I already said above … (Posted again below.)

It sounds like to me that the feat you are trying to add may have some extra ELC checks going on, or something like that, which is simply not allowing the extra slot to be applied due to other hard-code checks???

I mean, just to be 100% sure it is working, have you tried levelling a wizard to see if the extra feat is providing the slots OK? At least then you can rule out that side being broken.

If you look at my above reply, you will see that I have tried that.

@temyankee

Did you mean this?

I was not sure which point you were making, as in “nothing changed” from what?

“Nothing changed” … It works on a wizard as normal, or …
“Nothing changed” … It did not work for wizards too?

If it is the former, (it worked), then the problem is with the “race” somehow.
If it is the latter, then you have broken the feat somehow. (*)

(*) This is why I posted my own initial response to show it does work with a wizard.

This reply.

@temyankee

For clarification …

What I mean to say is (as a test) have you tried levelling a human wizard until they can take the feat?

I have to make the assumption that this is still that other race you are testing, which we know does not work.

If you test a human wizard, you will NOT have the option for the feat until higher levels. I am asking what results you get with the Extra Slot feat when applying to a human wizard.

That was for a human wizard, not the other race. I was not able to select the feat early, did not give the feat early. I selected the feat normally and nothing happened.

@temyankee

Hang on … OK, I misread your previous post …

Very well, the problem appears to be that you have broken the feat in general.

Try taking out all added content and testing your human wizard again, so you can see it working.

Something in your override (or added content) has broken this (by the looks of it).
