Is it possible to replace a module henchman portrait with an override file?

Well met.

I am somewhat stiffled being on mac, so no amazing toolset to change stuff like this in the module code. Really amazing module I am playing, but not so keen on the henchman portrait chosen. Is it possible to replace a module henchman portrait with an override file?

A pearl to you in advance.

If the module is using a standard portrait, you can put a different portrait in override, using the same file names.

If the module is using a custom portrait in a hak, provided you have EE, you can put your preferred portrait in the development folder (N.B. it’s strongly recommended that this method is only employed for personal use, never for distributing mods to others).

Do you know the name of the portrait you want to override? If not, can you use the Windows tool nwnexplorer on a Mac? If “no” to both, someone here can probably help if you post the name of the module and henchman.

You do know you can run the toolset on a Mac using WINE as long as you haven’t upgraded past Mojave ? I’m stubbornly refusing to upgrade for that reason alone!

Well met.

Many thanks Proleric. Not not running EE on my MacBook Pro for this module. Still prefer the original Neverwinter Nights on my Apple Titanium laptop. Great idea to try Nwexplorer at the very least. Will do. Worst that can happen is Bill Gates sends me a pesonal email with a ‘no can do’.

And many thanks also jimdad55. What a really neat idea. Use Wine. Never even thought about that. What a dunce. This opens up a whole new world of Neverwinter to me. There goes all of next weekend. Cancel all brunches and evening drinks with friends next on my list. Then search for Wine.

A pearl to you both.

If you can get Wine working, you should be able to use NWNExplorer and NWHak. On 1.69, you can use NWHak to override a hak portrait by replacing it in the hak, or putting your version in the top hak - but back up the haks first!

Thanks. Link

Works perfectly for me ( other than F9 for testing stopped working a few updates ago so I need to open the game itself to test.) Let me know if you run into problems. Remember, if you’ve updated your Mac to Catalina or Big Sur, you’re screwed. In which case, you could probably still create a partition on your hard disc and install WINE and a copy of Mojave there.

NWHak is no issue but I had trouble getting NWNExplorer to work. not sure why.

Fair enough but wouldn’t dismiss the thought of EE for good. It seems ( for me) to open everything older but original won’t do the same. Lots of GREAT new assets and modules to discover! It’s also really cheap if you can grab it in a sale.

Hak editing can be also done with tlkedit (java). But yeah, make backups.

If you haven’t done it already, you can write a shell script which will auto-load the module.

To jump right in with a default character (this is what F9 does):

wine nwmain.exe +TestNewModule module_name

To arrive at character selection screen:

wine nwmain.exe +LoadNewModule module_name

(no .mod after module_name)

Well met.

Many thanks again Proleric. Will give both NWNExplorer and NWHak a try once Wine is humming along.

And many thanks again also jimdad55. Wine on my list to download tonight, just 250 odd mbs. Thank you for your notes on upgrade traps, but you need not worry. I am not the one to rush to update just because one becomes available. MacBook Pro is staying at Sierra, 10.12.6 because it runs all I need so damn well. Really good to hear that EE runs all. I have purchased but not really played around with it yet.

A pearl to you both.
