Just started replaying NWN2 - performance tips?

I played NWN2 on my Mac way back when I still had Boot Camp. However, I lost that ability when Apple put the kybosh on Boot camp. Couldn’t ever get it to work solely on WINE.

Purely by chance last week I opened an old Crossover bottle and saw that I had NWN2 in it, tried it and it opened first time, which it hadn’t before. Now, performance isn’t great but I’ve had no crashes whatsoever so far, so what I’m looking for are:

  1. any mods/fixes I should definitely be using? When I started it last time I’m sure folk here gave me a couple of things I should add. Can’t find that thread.

  2. Is anyone else playing NWN2 on Mac or Linux using Crossover? Could do with info on type of bottle and DX9 ( think it used that?)

  3. any tips for increasing performance - I’ve taken the resolution /textures/usual suspects down.

  4. …and this is embarrassing - I can’t find the original .exe to open the game even with a search on the Mac although self evidently it must be there somewhere! Got it from GOG and their installations seem to go to weird and wonderful places.

Have to say I’m enjoying it - helps that the OC is a bit better than the EE one but it’s not a one way street. There are definitely other places where EE has moved on beyond it. Loving the party control though.

I’ve emailed Crossover support so if they come up with anything I’ll post it here.

PS. I decided to play a lawfully good fighter this time rather than my usual mage. Came as a bit of a shock to see I couldn’t multi class with a Barbarian because of this. That’s what happens when you dash into something (!) so if anyone has a quick steer on what the next best MC options are I’d be grateful.

Hi Jimdad55,

My favorite MCs in general are cleric + <something> or rogue + <something>. A cleric/rogue with a good Cha and some points in Use Magic Device in a setting with enough available magical items (whether purchased, looted, etc.) is pretty versatile.

I played The Scroll | The Neverwinter Vault by @Lance_Botelle on Normal difficulty setting with a druid/rogue. It was a challenge, but it was also a pretty neat combo.

Peformance : game CPU bound, with very good lighting which could require a correct cooler for the GPU.

This is the best repository of character building info for NWN2 in existence. It’s been having issues with hosting lately because of the age of the db software it runs on so it may not be around much longer. https://nwn2db.com/
