Merging textures

So there is this terrifying Troll. I tried to convert him to 169/diamond (to the right) but there is a serious loss of quality, seemingly owed to the fact that I use only the main texture for 1.69.

Is there a way to merge the four textures into one?

You want to generate an ambient occulsion map from the diffuse and then bake that into it. That will give the diffuse the shadowing like what you see on the vanilla game textures. However, you’ll never get the full quality you can with pbr mapping.

Of course, not. Otherwise it would make no sense to pass 4 textures to the engine. But maybe the results are good enough? I would give it a try, if I had the ability.

Shader Map 4 can do it. Then you just use something like GIMP or Paint Shop Pro to merge the two. In PSP, you’d copy the AO and add it to the Diffuse map as a “multiply” layer.
