NWN2 laggy now - seems odd

Ok. Follow up question here then. As I said, but maybe not that clearly, I put the client extension folder into my folder, not the <mydocs/Neverwinter Nights 2> folder. Is that wrong? Just thinking out loud since you said to put these txt files in my mydocs folder and…well, I’m not sure exactly how the Client Extension opperates, so that’s why I’m asking.

I’m pretty sure it doesn’t matter where you install the client extension as long as its exe and hdl files are in the same folder.

this is (more or less) standard install, i believe

<install>\Neverwinter Nights 2\ClientExtension

w/ autocmds in

<player>\Neverwinter Nights 2

Shit I look like a big moron now !

I thought that the Client_Extension {CE} was mainly addressed to users of win_10 (I floched win_10 and re-install window_7 one year ago).

Now under your guidance, I just re-installed the CE under win_7 and NwN2 run even better than before !! Holy crap !

Seriously, a huge thank you. I would pay you a beer, but I’m a bad beer companion because I don’t drink anymore … I still don’t know why I didn’t think about it earlier …

Cheers anyway ! :beers:

Although the Client Extension works flawlessly on my main computer, when installing it on my laptop I got some strange behaviour. I have Windows 10 Home on that one so maybe that’s got something to do with it. When starting my module and the initial dialogue comes up and you are about to choose between two different replies when I click the mouse over one of the replies nothing happens. When testing at first by pressing Alt-Tab I eventually got to choose somehow, but when testing again the computer sort of crashed, I couldn’t even shut down the game through Ctrl-Alt-Delete. The first time when I in some way got past the initial dialogue I noticed, just as with my main computer, the game running smoother so…It would be really nice to be able to use Client Extension on my laptop also, but as of now I don’t know if that’s possible.

Edit: Did some more testing on my laptop, and now when I run the game and not use the Client Extension I still feel the game is running a bit smoother and I can click on the answers as it should be. I again closed the game and tried running through the Client Extension and it was the same problem as before, but now I could at least press Ctrl-Alt-Delete and close the game. Real strange.

Well, I do most of the work on the module on my main computer anyway so this is no big deal. I won’t be using the Client Extension on my laptop though, if I playtest on that one.

Hi andgalf,

For the record, when I used the Client Extension to try to resolve a similar issue, I had one or two minor “glitches” (jumping about) that made me decide not to use it too. That said, I did not use some of the fixes mentioned here, so that may have made a difference.

If you had not rebooted your computer for some time, then I think that may have made a big difference too. (It makes a big difference on my wife’s computer when the slight slow down -jittery- occurs.) But, if you are working well now, then that’s good!

Cheers, Lance.

I experienced something like this too recently, plus it caused my party members to glitch all over the place and some modules/campaigns failed to launch at all. After going through every possible solution, I discovered that the culprit was the latest version of the Client Extension. Reverting to 1.0.0.26 made it more stable.

Nice info to know!

I’m not sure if there are any fixes to this, maybe @travus would know about it.

No idea about that issue. Skywing might be the better one to ask about that. I have the latest version (1.0.0.31) on my desktop with win10 - no issues.

@BowShatter Hmmm. Interesting and good to know. Since I’ve now rebooted my computer I’ll see how the module runs without the Client Extension, but I will recommend trying the Client Extension once I (in a year or so) release the module I’m working on now if people experience glitches and stuttering in the animations.

Skywing is quite active on Discord. I might bring up the issue with him there and see how he responds. He seems very qualified when it comes to these things.

@Lance_Botelle You mean the fixes with the .txt files? Well, I’ll try and run the game again now with the same area as before, but without the Client Extension, and see how it runs on my main computer.

Yes, exactly.

The bottom line, I was trying to stop the stutter that can sometimes occur on her computer when it has been updated. However, after testing it with the CE (and then removing it again), I found that just rebooting the computer when I experience the slow down on hers fixed the issue.

Note: There does not appear any pattern to when the computer needed rebooting, simply that rebooting whenever it happened sorted the issue. The only thing I think that may have been in common, was (1) I had done a lot of module updating (by uploading her version of the game with new files) or (2) Windows had done some updating behind the scenes.

Note 2: Sometimes, I even had to shut down (power off) and then reboot to sort it.

Cheers, Lance.

@Lance_Botelle I tried the game now and I must say the module ran a lot better. A tiny bit of stutter was left with the text above the PC’s head, but there was a big difference now that I had rebooted. The walking animations were a lot better. I’ll see if I’ll use the Client Extension from now on.
It’s weird that you need to reboot Win10, but I guess that’s the way it works. Never had to do that with Win7.

I read somewhere that Windows 10 sometimes needs to do this with some programs … maybe just the older ones. Something to do with 64/32 bit operations. I don’t understand it completely, but if I ever find the article I’ll post the link.

Cheers, Lance.

i believe its caused by a 64-bit vs 32-bit truncation issue in the OS clock … best ask Sky tho.

ie, the engine was coded for 32-bit machines and its game loop doesn’t deal well with 64-bit clocks (and it gets worse the longer a computer has been running)

What KevL said … that sounds like it. I wasn’t far off.

@kevL_s Ah, that sounds logical. Good to know.

When I first updated I didn’t notice any issues too, but they surfaced when I tried to play King’s Festival+Queen’s Harvest and Conan Chronicles 1. The first kept producing a “module corrupt” error, reported as error “Invalid ERF rejected (Zero length string)” in the Client Extension, while the latter crashed immediately after creating a character and entering the module.

I tested this 2 times comparing the latest and rolled back version, turns out it was indeed the new version that was causing these issues.

I hope you got King’s Festival+Queen’s Harvest working eventually.

I did, only to be rather disappointed in the campaign. It gave me the impression that there was going to be some epic plot with how it was set up, only to end King’s Festival abruptly after killing a whole bunch of orcs and a really generic human boss. Queen’s Harvest was larger sure, but by that time my impression of the campaign was ruined, didn’t help that there were pointless areas of just walking.

I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy it. Since it is a remake of a published PnP adventure there is only so much one can do with plot and villains.
