On item acquire, effects not displaying on PC (SOLVED)

I created a random property script for the base on item acquire script and for 2 days I have not been able to figure out why 2 visual effects are not firing from the script.

Today created a module that allows me to choose any visual effect and apply it from a conversation. The 2 visual effects I have chosen for the “item upgraded” effect will play in my Visual Effects test mod but I just don’t understand why they wont play in the on item acquire script.

The edited script has been placed in the override folder for when I am playing the OC.

I have tried this several different ways without success and obviously I have no idea why.

The script does tell me that the script fires and returns the name of my character… just no effects.

My guess is that the second effect does not exist anymore when the delayed ApplyEffectToObject is executed because it is destroyed when the script PlayEffects() terminates.

Move the creation of effect 2 and the ApplyToObject() into a separate function and call that function with DelayCommand().

No idea why effect 1 does not work.

I believe VFX 896 is no longer available in NWN2 via the EffectVisualEffect function. You have to use the EffectNWN2SpecialEffectFile instead.

I cannot take credit for putting the list together, but I have now put it up on my website for others to refer to.

For the other effect, try delaying the call to “PlayEffects” function and remove the delay from the function itself. Although, I recall I had to fire a VFX from an ExecuteScript function call when I did something similar to this. Therefore, if moving the delay does not work, have the PC fire another script with the VFX being fired from that instead.

note that the constants that EffectVisualEffect() takes are row-ids in VisualEffects.2da

#587 - VFX_HIT_SPELL_MAGIC plays sp_magic_hit.sef on the “Imp_HeadCon_Node”
#869 - VFX_FNF_CRAFT_SELF plays fx_craft_self.sef also on the “Imp_HeadCon_Node”

The Sefs can be played with (my) toolset plugin Special Effects Viewer if you want to preview them.

 
but not sure why your function doesn’t work … are the Sef files being overridden perhaps

the SpecialEffectsViewer plays fx_craft_self.sef okay. Both Sefs play okay …

Both VFX effects work in my Visual Effects test module, I even made a spreadsheet of what effects worked and what ones didnt.

FYI my install is just NWN2 with no updates, I had a difficult time getting it and the toolset to run on Windows 7.

I got it working using the EffectNWN2SpecialEffectFile function.

I am very familiar with NWN code and the toolset but I have only been into the NWN2 toolset for 4 or 5 days now. I figured it was something like this.

This is maybe not that important, and doesn’t have that much to do with what you’re trying here, but I just wanted to point out that when you write code like this you don’t need to do this:

void PlayEffects(object oPC);
void PlayEffects(object oPC)
{

//code stuff

}

It’s enough that you do this:

void PlayEffects(object oPC)
{

//code stuff

}

However, if you have the “content” of the function (the main code that is) at the end of the script with the void main() in between, it might be necessary, but if they are after each other, like in your script, it’s redundant.

I noticed that it didn’t display the description in the bottom window of the script editor like NWN did. I figured it would work the same but I am still learning.

Ah, OK, I guess that source may be incorrect then? :thinking: (EDIT: A misunderstanding. The list is correct, but I had not explained its purpose very well. :speak_no_evil:)

I.e. The VFX “sef” does not work with the EffectVisualEffect function (as the OP originally had it), but will with the EffectNWN2SpecialEffectFile function, as later discovered.

Well that would suggest it should work then … I’ll take a closer look and post back unless its sorted by then. :slight_smile:

Ah, I just spotted this, which confirms what I was trying to say about the function being used was not able to fire that effect. That list I have linked to helps you to determine when and when you can or cannot use the EffectVisualEffect function. You have to use the sef function to make it work instead.
