The Scroll (v1.14E) ... PENDING! (ESSENTIAL FIX: Stop Hope Rekindled Attacking During Conversation.)

NB: This is the THIRD EDITION of CAMPAIGN v1.09E as I had to fix other minor monster AI bugs. I believe the status should now be considered IMPORTANT as it can make a difference to monsters with ranged weapons or certain talents. NB: One person had downloaded the previous version of this release.

As nobody had yet downloaded the latest files (and I can no longer edit the last post title), I decided to provide another update (v1.09E) for those that would like to have the latest files. This update comes RECOMMENDED , as it sorts a number of COMBAT cosmetics, especially on a party wide wipeout. It also fixes the right-click examine of creatures so that they only require a single right-click instead of having to do it twice. This also has the ADDED journal reminder GUI update.

NOTE: I have also updated the module to synch release numbers.

The full list in this latest v1.09E include:-

  1. SPEECH: Stop brief spotlights on empty speech. (Cosmetic.)
  2. COMBAT: Removed clear action command at combat start if not auto-pausing.
  3. COMBAT: Cleared end of combat “enemy seek” if all party dead. (Monsters do not run away.)
  4. COMBAT: Ensured Round Counter reset and restarts if respawn after a party wipeout.
  5. EXAMINE: Fixed examine creature to work first time on right-click - and not to have to do so twice.
  6. FOLLOW: Added Main PC to auto-follow if controlling another PC in AI off mode (and switch area).
  7. AUTO-EXAMINE: Added (fixed) repair bench to auto-examine on first click usage.
  8. SMITH: Removed unnecessary PC feedback from smith conversation.
  9. JOURNAL/NOTE: Added journal/note read reminder to “show gui” if one is pending unread.

ADDED FROM 2ND EDITION OF v1.09E

  1. COMBAT AI: Fixed ammo usage & weapon select of monsters.

ADDED FROM 3RD EDITION OF v1.09E

  1. MONSTER AI: Made Knockdown, Persistent Auras and Rusting “free” actions. This means a creature can still attack if they use (or attempt to use) these actions. E.g. Stops fighters getting stuck trying to Knockdown PCs and never actually fighting.

Fifty hours of single player play to only reach level 9?
What we are? In the 90’s?
Seriously, it’s a video game.
When I think of playing this game, I first think of which character to play.
When I choose which character to play, I obviously design a build, and this build I build it on 30 levels now, at least 20!
What am I supposed to do with such a long adventure that only takes me to the ninth level?
Should I design myself a tenth level character?
But what waste of time is it?

Well, actually, this campaign is designed more like a D&D adventure from PnP style, where it is as much about the journey as it is levelling.

In fact, personally, I think 20 levels is more than enough to have scope to improve during the campaign. Also, don’t forget that this is the first of three modules … if I can get that far. :slightly_smiling_face:

So, I would respond that if you like a journey that builds a character slowly over a large story arc, that feels more like PnP, then this is for you. However, if your style is more akin to a CRPG like “levellers” of Diablo ilk, then this may not be for you.

Bottom line, it’s a story adventure that you invest time and I hope will be more akin to LotR style than HP. :grinning:

Horses for courses I guess … But give it a go, as you may like it.

Lastly, it is also designed for possible MP as well as SP, as well as an option for TB combat for us players who prefers that too. All are optional.

You also take PCs from this module into the ones that I hope to build later.

Unfortunately for me, I can’t fully enjoy a good story that isn’t written in my native language.
Fifty hours of complex history, to be followed in a foreign language, would require an effort to totally ruin the experience.
So, unfortunately for me, I have to direct my choices towards more action than narrative adventures.
Because if I have too much to read and choices to make without fully understanding them, I know that I would last very little.
This is the reason why I didn’t play the “Misteries of Westgate”, because it has never been translated into my language.

Sorry, I don’t know how easy it is to implement another language … But if I ever get to the end of the 3 modules, I may look into it if there is enough interest.

Alternatively, I would welcome any translations made by others if they know how to do it.

Lastly, just to say your own use of language appears quite good, so maybe you might do better than you realize … although there is a lot of reading, so I do understand.

1) WEIGHTS: Reworked weights for small (1), medium (10) and large (100) items. (Tenth lbs.)
2) LBPlaySound: Made homebrew play sound function more reliable when more than one sound at a time.
3) ROPE DROP: Fixed inability to pick up rope if dropped outside of rope attach spots.

Hi All,

This is an ESSENTIAL fix. In fact, a SP game may require a restart. (If you have a saved game prior to any update of v1.06E-v1.09E, then that should be fine. But this latest version is still required moving forward.)

UPDATE: My wife is playing through (yet again) just to be sure everything is now fine. At present she has been playing for 5 hours 35 minutes so far, without any issue.

The scripts that affect this module should no longer be affected from today. In fact, I think they only became damaged by the offending line of code as I was testing something else with module 2. I am now making it a strict code of conduct NOT to alter these scripts again, without including a global TEST MODE check being made first. So, in theory, these kind of problems should never occur again.

I am very sorry to have to report that on 27/12/19 (with v1.06E) I broke the area enter script. The above link goes to the latest v1.10 with the script fixed (and latest updates). The list of issues this would have potentially caused is so big that we can safely say that it would have wrecked the module. :sob: I am so sorry if this affected you … I can only hope that no feedback meant that players had not yet started the module to any degree.

Please, give feedback if you think you have been affected and if you like I will try to see what I can do for you if you prefer not to start again … A lot depends upon how much you had done.

It affects SP games from v1.06E (27/12/19 - 31/01/19). Fixed today 01/02/20. If you are playing a MP game, I believe you should be unaffected.

This was the offending line of code in alb_area_enter …

This latest version v1.10E also fixes:-

1) PARTY GENERATION: When a player may try to add companions that are already within the world.
2) AERIOL PARTY SIZE: Stops Aeriol misreporting party size too big when not.
3) MAIN PC HUNGER: Fixes hunger state of Main PC when respawned.
4) CREATED REMOVED: Removes abandoned created PCs from world on area exit now.
5) LIFE ESSENCE ACQUIRE: Rebalanced quantity that can be held & updated feedback in stats.

I have to report that I had to pull v1.10E (now replaced with v1.11E) due to discovering that the hak rearrangement (introduced with v1.06E on 27th Dec 2019) did also break some areas where certain door models were missing in the new hak arrangement.

The missing critical door models had affected The Halls of the Goblin Kings (Level 1) at least.

I am very sorry for these problems. I hope they will be worth the wait and readjustments to help alleviate any future downloads. Also, no more hak file rearrangements are required now.

NB: Replacing the new v1.11E campaign folder on existing games will fix any missing door issues.

You only require the CAMPAIGN FOLDER to fix all these issues, but I have also updated the module to stay in version number synch (for those that may like to start again).

Hi All,

During my wife’s play-through (playing an evil role this time around and some things that she had not tried in many previous play-throughs), she discovered the following essential/important bugs so far … after 21.75 hours of play.

  1. Cannot complete the evil path deal with the demon in Poor Communication side quest.
  2. Cannot complete the Mysterious Cave side-quest that requires Hag Eye drop.
  3. ESSENTIAL: Fixed Hope Rekindled from attacking during a conversation. (And others.)

All have been fixed in v1.14E.

Workaround for (1): Do not make a deal with the demon (combat it). Fixed inv1.12E.
Workaround for (2): There is no workaround for the lack of a Hag Eye drop. Fixed inv1.13E.
Workaround for (3): Possibly run away if you have received the wind chime. Fixed in v1.14E.

1) COMPANION PROTECTOR: Typo “as any other PC” and not “as the Main PC”. (Cosmetic.)
2) JOURNAL NOTE COLOUR: Changed from Dark Blue to Light Slate Blue. (Cosmetic.)
3) AUTO COMBAT PAUSING: Removed duplicated sound play that could interfere with auto-pause.
4) SOUND TRIGGER: Moved a sound trigger to be more reliable. (Cosmetic.)
5) DUPLICATED PUZZLE: Removed a duplicated Ripped Scroll (Rogue Stone) puzzle. (Cosmetic.)
6) LIFE ESSENCES: Rebalanced and reworded Life Essence collectability. (Cosmetic.)
7) PC IMPORT: Fixed option to allow a player to import a previously exported created PC.
8) HAG EYE NO DROP: There appears to be an issue with the Hag’s Eye not dropping. (**)

OBSERVATIONS: (NOW FIXED IN LATEST v1.14E):-

1) BOOK TYPO: Fixed a typo on the cursed tome. Destory > Destroy. (Cosmetic.)
2) CHAOS VORTEX: Stopped duplication of magic casting message. (Cosmetic.)
3) PC NAMES: Added additional check to prevent duplicated PC names that could confuse.
4) TREE HOPE ATTACKS: Stopped tree Hope Rekindled from attacking when it should not.

OBSERVATIONS: (OTHER):-

Currently None.
